Site preparation activities for the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant Project are underway. This work includes removing some existing concrete from the site, which can be noisy at times as the concrete is broken down with excavators. Concrete removal is scheduled to be complete by the end of July to allow for the installation of the stone columns.
Using stone columns instead of piles for ground strengthening significantly reduces vibrations and noise. Materials for the stone columns will be transported by barge, and then trucked a short distance to site removing approximately 1,500 truck trips from local roads, further minimizing the potential construction impacts to the community.
Stone column installation will begin late July and take approximately five months to complete, with work typically taking place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays as necessary.
Construction Site Office
The location of the site office is currently used as a parking lot (see map below). Please be advised that effective August 15, 2017, there will be no parking allowed. This area will be closed for the duration of the Project.
Stormwater Utility Relocation Along West 1st Street
During the pre-construction activities, a stormwater utility was identified at the west end of the Project site. This utility will need to be relocated to West 1st Street to undertake the ground strengthening and site improvement activities required for the Project.
The relocation work will take approximately eight weeks to complete, and is scheduled to begin mid August. While work is underway, the sidewalk, bike lane, and street parking along West 1st Street from Philip Avenue to mid-way through the Project site (see map below), will be temporarily closed. Pedestrians and cyclists will be directed to take alternate routes, such as the north side of West 1st Street and Welch Street. Detour signs will be in place to direct pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic control personnel will be in place as needed. Vehicle traffic will not be affected.
